Most people don’t expect a dental emergency to ever happen to them. Sadly, severe toothaches and other urgent dental problems can occur when you least expect it. If you don’t already have an emergency dentist you can turn to for this type of situation, you will need to find one as soon as possible. Here are some tips for choosing an emergency dentist when you really need one.
Call Your Regular Dentist First
Obviously, it would be best for your emergency dentist to be the same one that you turn to for routine checkups and cleanings. As soon as a dental emergency strikes, call your regular dentist to see if they can help. Many dental practices are happy to offer same-day appointments for patients with issues that require immediate attention.
Search for Other Dentists in the Area
If your regular dentist is unable to accept emergency appointments, the next best thing to do is to look for other dental offices near you. Ideally, they should have a location that you can get to within 20 or 30 minutes. It’s also best to confirm that they accept your dental insurance plan.
When you find a suitable dentist, call their office immediately to see if they’re willing to schedule same-day appointments for new patients. Don’t hesitate to voice any questions you might have about the practice before you make any commitments.
Ask Your Friends and Family Members for Suggestions
Are you having trouble finding an emergency dentist on your own? It may be beneficial to check with your friends and loved ones to see if they have any suggestions. Some of them may have had dental emergencies of their own in the past – and thus can point you toward whichever dentist helped them find relief.
If All Else Fails, Go to the Emergency Room
The emergency room should generally be treated as the last resort for dental emergencies. Generally speaking, the doctors at the emergency room won’t be able to perform complex dental procedures and thus lack the means to address the root cause of your oral health problem.
However, if you’re completely unable to find an emergency dentist, the doctors at the emergency room can at least help relieve any pain that you’re experiencing. That way, you can stay as comfortable as possible until you can visit a dentist.
It’s best to already have a plan in place when a dental emergency strikes, but if you’re ever in a situation where you need to find an emergency dentist right away, the tips above can make a significant difference.
